Telstra’s Woes – A Warning for the rest of us?

Dumb/Stupid, IT/Networking/Internet, Law/Legal, News No Comments »

Some moron with a jackhammer managed to cut through 400mm of concrete, straight through fibre optics and copper cables, knocking out internet, telephones, and mobile connectivity for thousands in the CBD. The repair bill is estimated to be $1,000,000 + probable compensation for homeowners and businesses. It will take over a week to pull and re-splice new fibre, and then longer to re-patch 10, 000 copper pairs.

But that got me thinking – all the western countries are all hyped up over the threat of terrorism. We have extra tight security at airports (or none, in some cases -.- ), anti-terrorism laws, warning speakers installed in the city, ASIO/FBI/M1X bla bla bla.

But what’s to stop a terrorist wreaking havoc just by taking an axe to a few telecommunications and power cables? Last time I checked, the telecomms ducts could be accessed relatively easily by a single person with a screw driver, nor are any of the vital cables physically shielded or hardened in any way.

I could cut internet and phone access to the (North Ryde) Business Park down the road from my house, just from being over-enthusiastic with a backhoe and digging a 50cm hole in my front yard.

Poof! There goes the 10G metro fibre rings. Goodbye, thousands of copper pairs. *Throws rope across street* Sayonara Telstra, Optus and Foxtel HFC networks. There’s so much fibre/hfc/copper running through my street it’s not funny.

If I remember correctly a similar case happened in the US to AT&Ts network. A disgruntled employee came along one night, lifted the hatch to a fibre duct, and went snippety-snip. Half the city lost internet access, phones stopped working and 911 calls disappeared into a black hole.

Sure, I’d get screwed by the AFP because willfully tampering with telecommunications is a federal offense but hey, I get my share of the limelight in the media! Now what was the number for Kennard’s Hire again…

GG to these asstards for making everyone’s lives better: http://www.itnews.com.au/News/155993,parking-rangers-add-to-telstra-outage-woes.aspx

Blag moving… yet again!

Celebration/Event, IT/Networking/Internet, Web No Comments »

*Blag is moving again. From the Liquid Web datacenter in rural Chicago to the Telecom Center in LA California.

Same domain name and URL  – just a different server though.

Los Angeles is much faster for Asia Pacific visitors. That and the fact I get a lifetime 70% discount for moving :)

US visitors can suck it up – they start whinging as soon as latency goes above 50ms which is insignifcant compared to the 400-650ms required to get to Middle Eastern countries and the Indian region. As for Europe… Chicago or Los Angeles makes no difference to them.

Speaking of latency, I figured out why Unwired WiFi hotpots are so shit in general… more to come on that later.

*May incur 24 hours downtime.

Woo! Patch Tuesday is upon us

Consumer, IT/Networking/Internet, Software No Comments »

And Microsoft opens the first patch Tuesday of 2009 with a critical SMB bug, which is predicted to leave a similar trail of destruction as the Sasser and Blaster worm. I’m surprised such a blatantly obvious (in hindsite) bug was undiscovered for over 10 years. In any case, anyone with even the most basic firewall is safe, but that leaves corporate networks screwed, as typically, they don’t have firewalls on individual workstations.

Edit: 8 million computers infected so far by the ‘Sleeper Virus”, according to CNN US anyway…  Alss there is a variant known as Downadup or Conficker [F-Secure]. It has the potential to create massive botnets, spewing out fake domains andmass infecting vulnerable web domains. So far, most infections tracked by researchers are coming from corporate networks, but due to NAT, each IP could represent 2 computers, or 2000. The worm dictionary attacks users computers, locking them out of Active Directory.

Billion 7401VGP R3

Hardware, IT/Networking/Internet 2 Comments »

Woo! Replacement for my crappy Netcomm NB5Plus4 (see this post) finally arrived – the Billion 7401VGP R3 :)

As it turns out, I bought a 7401VGP-M but actually got a free upgrade to a 2009 model (7401VGP R3), which isn’t even in the stores yet, let alone listed on the manufacturers website. Doing a Google or Whirlpool search brings up nothing – that’s how new it is. Perhaps Internode got a very advanced shipment of them.

According to the helpdesk dude, its got exactly the same features, but with a faster CPU, more ram, and newer OS which should make it more stable and increase its routing capabilities.

As side bonus, it has WiFi built in – 802.11g 54mbps admittedly, but now I have 2 wireless networks in my house. How useful…

But boy, is it an improvement.

4 wired PCs + 1 wireless laptop, all streaming data continuously, and one of the PCs running 14 active torrents and it still hasn’t crashed after 4 days now. Web interface is as responsive as ever, and includes everything AND the kitchen sink too :) Ambient temperature has no effect whatsoever on it, and wireless range is damn good. Not a single dropout so far either, and it syncs relatively high, considering the crappy phone line I have. The included extras were good too – 2m Cat5 cable (what, is E more expensive now?), RJ11-RJ11 6P4C telephone cable, 12v 1A power adaptor (switchmode, so no clunky hot transformer), obligatory quick start guide, warranty card, utility CD-ROM, and a very nice (and expensive) C10 Communications ADSL2+ filter/splitter  :) Those things cost a LOT when purchased retail…

The only downside really is that it takes a while to boot up before its usable (~1-2 minutes). However, it does sync and authenticate in <8 seconds which is a HUGE improvement on the NB5Plu4′s 2-3 minutes (important if your internet drops out frequently).

So myes, I am a happy chappy.

If only Billion would list the model on their website, so I could download a newer firmware.

Edit: Seems like more people are getting their hand on the 7401VGP R3 now. Posts are slowly starting to crop up on whirlpool about them – mainly Internode customers though.

Edit2: Seeing as I’ve been getting a lot of hits from Whirlpool users, for all you those who have ended up here looking for the firmware updates, or help with Bit Torrent and/or NAT, try sending a Whim to Quentin (Rep for Billion/Minitar). His profile is at: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-user.cfm?id=87096
